Tori says you’re the heartbeat of Nectar…tell us what you do here?
I do a little bit of everything here; I’ve grown into my role as the general manager. Basically, it’s my job to know exactly what’s going on at all times. Everything from who’s doing what, connecting the dots between staff and store, to managing wholesale. I’m currently supporting with the launch of our new food menu with sourcing, packaging, displays, making instructions for the staff, and working to make things as easy as possible for everyone.
Start-ups are hard; what has kept you on the ship?
Tori, and knowing that this was a mission that I wanted to be a part of. I understood the vision and the values and I liked being a part of that. I always feel heard, valued and I enjoy getting to be a decision maker here.
What have you discovered about yourself since you started working here?
I feel like in general, my life at this time has been in a growth phase; both in my personal life and with my career. I didn’t really know what I wanted when I started working for Nectar and now I feel like I have a place. I’ve also learned my capacity for growth and discovered my strengths & my weaknesses; which have both been equally important to me.
What’s been the greatest challenge and reward in your Nectar journey?
The challenge has definitely been the growing pains and learning as I go. Dropping the ball on things never feels good, but you learn through it. Also, managing people because I had never managed anyone before, including myself. The reward has been seeing the company grow and having a team that’s truly invested and tightknit - it’s exciting to be a part of. Everyone’s on the same page.
What are you most passionate about in life & why?
I’m definitely passionate about health and fitness, obviously. That’s something I’ve really challenged myself with in the past few years - to do things within fitness that I fully enjoy doing. And running; it’s my form of meditation.
What is your favourite thing on the menu & why?
The new Bliss Bowl, which is the warm rice bowl on our lunch menu. It tastes delicious, it makes you feel so good, it has fermented foods, and you don’t feel heavy after. It feels so fresh.
Rumour has it, you have a nickname or two at Nectar. What are they?
Everyone here calls me C but one of our customers calls me Beyoncé. Why Beyonce? [This customer] was planning a themed party and on the front of the ticket was Beyoncé. At the time, I was taking a Beyoncé dance class (I wanted to be her back up dancer). It’s still a dream of mine.
What made you decide to go into holistic nutrition?
I’ve always had a passion for health and wellness; it’s always been a huge part of my lifestyle. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life; I felt really stuck. I had a friend in the program and she spoke about what she was learning: how the body worked, how different foods can make you feel a certain way and the huge outlying effects of that. I was so interested, I signed up immediately and moved here.
